David and Delfina Hernandez Fiachna Winter Sun just brings me to my knees. The fiddle and flute completely summons my core to the submission of such beauty.
Just played this again after your performance with Tom Dunne and Alan Conner on The Late Late Show. Your energy on the trad song was incredible. Still grappling with a continent and an ocean keeping me at bay with the gigs of humanity being right there in Ireland. Dont Stop!

colpatterson Take a Look Around With you is a gentle beauty. Perhaps my favourite Fiachna track. The lyrics take us with him down the country road to French shores without a care. A gorgeous song. Favorite track: Take A Look Around With You.

Bottle of Rum My timbers are straining Like on old ship at sea, Will it ever stop raining Down on me, My sails are weighed down And my tiller won't steer, And only one screaming seagull For company here. Yo, ho, and a bottle of rum, Yo, ho, whats done is done. The sea comes alive Incarnate in man. It falls and it rises, And we do what we can. To ride on the crest Of that savage wave, The ocean's my master, And I am its slave. Yo, ho, and a bottle of rum, Yo, ho, whats done is done. Are you out there? Something's breaking on the horizon. Is it you or just another desert island? Can I land, can I come into your harbour? Or must I wait for the oceans to be calmer? Must I stay eternally at sea? With only one screaming seagull for company.. Yo, ho, and a bottle of rum, Yo, ho, whats done is done. Yo, ho, and a bottle of rum, Yo, ho, whats done is done.

Take A Look Around With You They got palm trees in the winter, Bamboo in the yard, I don’t know where we’ve been, But I sure know where we are, Take a trip out of the city, To a little coastal town, Put your feet up, Put your bags down, And take a look around. Sea is grey but the skies are blue, And the wreckage from the wall falls into the ocean, Take a turn down a country road, Where everything is new, Take a good look around with you. The sands are waiting for the summer, The cabana paint peels off, The wind is whispering its secrets Through the valleys and the troughs, There’s no need to hurry Because time will surely pass, Little children know sandcastles Were never meant to last. Sea is grey but the skies are blue, And the wreckage from the wall falls into the ocean, Take a turn down a country road, Where everything is new, Take a good look around with you. The winds will blow and the rain will pour, Let the water come crashing up to the shore, Blow sweet wind, Blow sweet wind, Blow sweet wind some more… Sea is grey but the skies are blue, And the wreckage from the wall falls into the ocean, Take a turn down a country road, Where everything is new, Take a good look around with you. Take a good look around with you. With you...

Amhrán na Trá Báine Mo mhíle slán leat, a Éire bhocht nar dheas é an tEarrach fhéin? Níl an chaint ar obair bhossanaí ná rud ar bith mar é. Ó seal ag baint na feamainne, ag cur fhataí is ag baint fhéir, Níl fear ar bith dhá bhoichte acu nach raibh feilm aige dhó féin. Ó tá caitheamh is cáin ar Éire bhocht a cheapfainn féin n ár chóir, Tá an fear ag baint na bhfataí ann, tá an bhean ag bleáint na bó, Ní hé sin féin do Mheiriceá, déan obair nó lig dhó, Ach má shaothraíonn bean an dollar ann, tá an fear amuigh dhá ól. Muise, an cuimhneach libh a dheartháireachaí, lá ar fhága mé an Trá Bháin? Ní bhfuair mé an té a chuir an chomhairle orm, ná a dúirt liom fanacht ann. Níl deartháir agam, níl deirfúir agam is níl mo mháthair beo, Ach m'athair atá lag lúbach, a Dhia cé'n t-ionadh dhó? Muise, báthadh Tom is Peadar orm, bhí uaigneas agam ina ndiaidh, Ó, Micil Bán ba mheasa liom, dá ndeachaigh thrím ariamh, Ó, deartháir eile a raibh Máirtín air, a báthadh fadó riamh, Ach scéal cráite an toinn bháite, is í d'fhága mé ina ndiadh. Ach d'fhága siad an caladh amach ar maidin leas an lá, Is pébí súile a chonaic iad, níor bheannaigh siad a n-ádh, Bhí an tae, tobac is siúicre acu, tháinig sé don Trá Bháin, Tháinig na curachaí ar an duirling, is na maidí don chaisleán.

This Is The Sea (Mike Scott) These things you keep You'd better throw them away You wanna turn your back On your soulless days Once you were tethered And now you are free Once you were tethered Well now you are free That was the river This is the sea! Now if you're feelin' weary If you've been alone too long Maybe you've been suffering from A few too many Plans that have gone wrong And you're trying to remember How fine your life used to be Running around banging your drum Like it's 1973 Well that was the river This is the sea! Now you say you've got trouble You say you've got pain You say've got nothing left to believe in Nothing to hold on to Nothing to trust Nothing but chains You're scouring your conscience Raking through your memories Scouring your conscience Raking through your memories… Well that was the river This is the sea... Behold the sea.

Sea Of Love 02:51
Come with me my love To the sea The sea of love I want to tell you How much I love you Do you remember When we met? That's the day I knew you were my pet I want to tell you How much I love you Come with me my love To the sea The sea of love I want to tell you How much I love you

about

I am delighted to release a brand new EP Winter Sun… a collection of three songs and one instrumental piece that all in their own way reflect my love of the sea!

The title track, an instrumental piece called Winter Sun was written and recorded as the soundtrack to an evocative short film depicting the simple beauty of the sea created by Niall Meehan at Sea Studio (seastudio.ie) whose image also features on the album artwork here. This collaboration was screened at the Social Fabric live podcast at the Whale Theatre in Greystones, Co Wicklow, near where we all swim! Fellow ocean enthusiast Clare Sands features here on fiddle.

There’s a newly recorded version of Bottle Of Rum, which originally appeared on my debut solo album Bougainvillea, now recorded in collaboration with Clare Sands. Clare plays fiddle, sings backing vocals and arranged the string section on this version. She also suggested dropping the key to suit the lower tones in my voice she felt should be heard! Fellow Hothouse Flower, Martin Brunsden also plays Bertha his beautiful double bass on this too!

Take A Look Around With You is a song written after a solitary trip to the Normandy coast when I lived in landlocked Paris for a number of years and any trip to the sea was a welcome blessing and relief from the intensity of the city. Some years later having completely forgotten writing and recording it, I found it on an old drive and when Clare Sands heard the rough and raw version she added some magical instrumentation to it and breathed new life into an old song!

Amhrán na Trá Báine (Song of the White Strand) is a sean-nós song I learned from the recordings of my great uncle Vail Ó Flaithearta which I recorded for a wonderful collaboration between myself and two friends; South African drummer/percussionist, Barry Van Zyl and his fellow countryman producer/composer/arranger Robin Hogarth. Amhrán na Trá Báine features the magical voices of the Gugulethu Cummunity Choir for whom we translated the themes of the song and Robin subsequently wrote and recorded their beautiful choral arrangement. Together we are called AFRIC and Amhrán na Trá Báine is a taste from an as yet unreleased body of work where we traded Irish songs and rhythms with South African songs and rhythms. The project was part funded by Foras na Gaeilge (forasnagaeilge.ie) and our hope is to complete the work soon and get it out into the world!
